Howdy Folks...I will try to provide more frequent updates as I am just getting used to this Blog system...
I was up at the Grand Canyon last week in the snow (make sure you bring cleats or crampons if you are going into the Canyon). The Canyon was beautiful and very, very quiet! It is amazing how few visitors there are at this time of year.
A few things I need to mention:
Due to recent weather a small portion of the North Kaibab Trail was washed out about 3 miles north of Phantom Ranch. The trail is passable on foot but hikers are advised to use caution. It is scheduled to be repaired in early February of this year.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION...I stopped by the Backcountry Office and picked up a permit for Hermit Trail in mid-May and was informed that they will be starting major construction on Hermit Road (West Rim Drive) on April 1st. Starting on that date anyone using the Hermit Trailhead must use the special shuttle which leaves the Backcountry Office (Information Center) to get to the trailhead (drop-off only). The shuttle will leave the Backcountry Office at 5:00am & 6:00am in April, and at 4:30am & 5:30am in May. Anyone hiking in the Canyon on or after April 1st will not be allowed to exit the Canyon via Hermit Trailhead. In June, July & August the Hermit Trailhead will be closed and no shuttle will be provided. Nor will anyone be allowed to drive, park, or even walk along Hermit Road (West Rim Drive). Construction is scheduled to last through fall 2008.
There is also a possible high-flow experiment that may take place in March 2008. This is when they open up Glen Canyon Dam and flood the Canyon. This has been done in the past to mimic the flooding that would naturally occur if it were not for the dam. The actual date has not yet been confirmed.
Have Fun & Keep Safe!
Brian
