Hi All...Here are a few new announcements concerning the Canyon...
A NEW LODGING CONCESSIONAIRE AT THE GRAND CANYON LODGE ON THE NORTH RIM
A few months ago Forever Resorts took over the lodging operation at the Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim. The Lodge is the only in-park lodge at the North Rim and had been run by Xanterra previously. (Xanterra still controls lodging operations at the South Rim and many other parks.) Forever Lodging's website for the North Rim is http://www.grandcanyonlodgenorth.com/ or phone (877 386-4383.
IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MADE TO THE SOUTH ENTRANCE ROAD
Highway 64 between the town of Tusayan and the South Entrance into Grand Canyon Nat'l Park (GCNP) will be re-paved and a north bound lane added. The work is scheduled to begin in February and should be completed by mid-May 2008. Delays during this time should be expected.
GCNP REPORTS AN INCREASE IN ANNUAL VISITATION
Folks at Grand Canyon NP recently reported an increase in annual recreational visitors - up 3.3% - with 4.4 million visitors during 2007.
WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS
Temps last night at the South Rim were about -10 degrees. Please remember that winter driving conditions exist throughout Northern Arizona from late November thru early April. After many years of drought we have received many inches of snow and rain this year and roads around Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon can be treacherous at times. When we drove back from the Canyon a week ago we witnessed many vehicles sliding off the road on Hwy I-17. Please be careful getting there and back!
