Fall Hiking Season in the Canyon!
The Autumn season is upon us and temperatures are getting quite nice here in the southwest. October has become one of, if not the, busiest times of the year for those exploring the Inner Canyon. It is undoubtedly my favorite time of the year to go into the Canyon. Thunderstorms have gone, pleasant temperatures return, cool breezes, fall colors - what more could you want?.
I tried calling Xanterra on October 1st, trying to make reservations just for meals at Phantom Ranch next year (Oct.,2009) for a Rim-to-Rim trip I'm starting to plan. I called over and over (until the battery on the phone died), only getting a busy signal for nearly three hours (again not dialing constantly during that time - but most of the time - dial, busy signal, end call, redial, busy signal, until finally getting into the queue. After finally speaking with a reservationist there were no cabins, dorms, or meals left available. Oh well!
Just a reminder that Phantom Ranch reservations are made 13 months in advance; while those staying in the backcountry campgrounds need permits, which are issued four months in advance.
Remember that Backcountry Permits for the Spring season are coming up soon...For overnight trips below the rim permits starting on any date in March should be applied for on the 1st of November, April permits can be applied for on December 1st. Good Luck!
Remember too - Havasu is still closed until at least the Spring of 2009. For more info visit their website at : www.havasupaitribe.com.
