On October 22nd, 2008 the body of Richard D. Jenkins, a 58 year old male from Chicago, IL, was found about 300 feet below the rim near the Yavapai Observation Station. Mr. Jenkin's duffle bag had been found abandoned near the Rim Trail and turned in to NPS authorities. That initiated an immediate investigation by park rangers, the body was confirmed by a park helicopter diverted from other duties for the search. The body was lifted via long-line at about 4:00 p.m. and transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's office. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the NPS at Grand Canyon.
