Mid-January Temperatures Rebound in Southwestern U.S.
Mid-January temperatures in the Southwest are above average and should stay that way for the time being. While the bulk of the country is in the deep freeze the Southwestern United States, from California through New Mexico, is now enjoying a mild winter after the repeated snow and rain storms of December. Daytime temps in the Inner Canyon (Phantom Ranch) are in the low 60's with nights right around freezing. The South Rim should remain in the low 50's during the day with temps dropping into the teens at night. The North Rim remains closed.
Some wilderness trails have been snowed in, so remember to check on line for updated trail info at: http://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/trail-closures.htm, or call the Backcountry Information Center (weekdays between 1 & 5 p.m.) at (928) 638-7875.
Crampons or cleats still need to be worn when traveling into the Canyon! They can be purchased inside the park at the Market Plaza General Store at the South Rim.
