Hi Lenny...Thanks for your comment. I believe anyone who enters the Grand Canyon should perform a little due diligence and have some idea of what they are literally getting into. Most people who die from the Inner Canyon's extreme temperatures are out of state visitors who check for canyon temperatures on their favorite weather related website - which provides temperatures on the South Rim of the park. They do not understand that the Inner Canyon is about 20 degrees hotter, and that is how they get into trouble. All I'm saying is people need to check with the Backcountry Information Center before entering the canyon and get the latest scoop on trail conditions.

If I do sound critical it is merely because this is a critical issue! Obviously with several heat related deaths occurring each year you, and other hikers that understand summer canyon hiking conditions, should be helping spread the word.

Thanks for your input!

All the Best,
Brian Lane

Hi Jen & Hans...I've been totally remiss in my blog duties while I'm in Massachusetts helping with my parents. My father passed away last month from cancer and my mother doesn't like to be left alone. I missed my October rim-to-rim trip with friend and backpacking buddy Larry Lindahl (after waiting in line back in May/June). I've been here in New England since mid-September helping out...oh well, there's always next year. Hope you had a wonderful trip, it was great to meet you both!

All the Best,
Brian Lane

Hello, I'm sooo sorry to hear about your father and hoping you are coping well. The reason I'm reaching out to you is I'm in need of help from someone who hikes in the Sedona area. We were at the West Fork hike on Monday, Nov 9th and my 10 yr old daughter lost her camera. The most tragic thing is what was on it. While we were in Arizona, my husband was moving us out of our house in Illinois. My daughter had taken lots of photos of the trees and house that she grew up in and now she's devasted. She did this the day before we left so I hadn't yet transferred them. Plus, my husband lost his job and thus cell phone on Nov 1st, and that cell number was the number I had on the phone. If you or anyone reading this happens to go out to that trail, we only went from the trailhead to the cave to the water with the red rock wall and back again. If anyone finds a Canon Powershot camera with the name Callie Gorney on the bottom, could you please e-mail us at gorney4@yahoo.com. Thank you. And again, my sympathy and prayers go out to you and your family in this sad time.

I'm sorry to hear about your parents and your cancellation. I'm particularly empathetic and sympathetic as my wife and I had reservations to Phantom Ranch this week-end and had to cancel a couple of weeks ago because of family illnesses.......kids AND parents. Welcome to the sandwhich generation, but this is what makes a trip to the Grand Canyon or others so special, a chance to get away in such a magnificent setting and just enjoy "being". May God bless you and your family and maybe we'll meet on the trail someday.

Brian, you seem very critical of hiker's, from all your blogs I've read. Yes, some people make mistakes at the canyon---and ultimately pay for it. You sound like you're above it all. And you never hike the canyon in summer??? How poor is that! What, heat a little too much for you??? Then don't be so damn critical and flippant about others. I've hiked the canyon for 30 years, and my best time is the summer. Back off....

Hello Brian,

Appreciate your comments on the Grand Canyon. My prayers are with the Gillies Family and the loss of such a young man. Any idea on what can be done to convince young male solo hikers of the danger that comes with the Canyon hike?
